What is a Chiropractor?

The simplest explanation of a Chiropractor, is a complementary medicine doctor that uses chiropractic adjustments, nutrition, rehabilitation exercises and other forms of alternative medicine to relieve pain, prevent pain, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

But this definition may vary slightly from chiropractor to chiropractor. This is due to a difference in philosophies.

Some Chiropractors believe that the bone is out of place which causes interference of the nerve that prevents the nerve from doing its job. This causes muscle spasms, pain and may even affect the internal organs.

Other Chiropractors believe that it is dysfunction that causes pain. Dysfunction being a restricted joint combined with weak muscles and/or tight muscles.

Some Chiropractors will work a lot with people’s nutrition, some may do homeopathic injections, and others will do rehabilitation exercises.

One of the wonderful things about the chiropractic profession is that there is such a wide variety of things we can do. But that also makes it very confusing as a patient to know which chiropractor to see.

Dr. Glasgow’s Chiropractic Treatment Philosophy

The philosophy I believe and use to determine my chiropractic treatments is that dysfunction causes pain.

When treating patients I will feel the spine in motion and challenge each vertebra in different directions to establish if it is moving well or which way it is not moving. This helps me decide how to adjust the spine to restore normal motion to it.

I will also evaluate the muscles by looking at posture and checking different muscles to verify which ones need to be stretched and which ones need to be strengthened.  I believe that you can’t address the bones without addressing the muscles as well.

I give patients exercises and stretches to do at home between office visits so that they can take their health into their own hands. And by adding in stretches and exercises patients will get better faster and learn how to keep themselves out of pain longer!

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Another question you may be asking: What is a chiropractic treatments or adjustment?

This is how we restore that motion back to a joint or move the bone back into place.

There are several different ways to adjust bones and joints. My preferred way to adjust patients is manually. I do this by setting patients up in different positions to isolate the joint we want to move so all it needs is a quick thrust into the joint to get it moving again.

Some doctors may use a tool to adjust that delivers a quick thrust into the joint, some even use a computer with an attachment that does this same thing, there are also triangular blocks that use gravity to move bones, and there are some techniques that are so gentle that you may barely feel them.

Even though I prefer manual adjusting it isn’t the only way I adjust patients, this all depends on what the patient prefers and what their needs are.

Along with the Chiropractic adjustments and rehabilitation exercises I also use acupuncture, massage therapy, spinal decompression, physiotherapy, and nutritional supplements to help get my patients feeling better and back to their lives!
